Description
This image is a watercolor conceptual painting of a cathedral with a Romanesque facade done by James L . Murphy , Jr . sometime between 1917 and 1942 . The painting shows the cathedral with its multiple arches and columns around its three sets of doors with stone carvings of saints , angels , and mythological animals above the doors , other arches and columns , windows , and moldings surrounded by trees and landscaping . The cathedral has sloping roofs over the wings with a second story over the main portion that has a round window and a peaked roof . There is a priest standing in front of the main doors . The painting is placed within framing art consisting of a stained glass window with an angel , a crucifix , and close-ups of three columns , the round window , and the stone carvings above the main doors . There are two labels in the upper left corner that read : "School of Architecture Architectural Renderings , RG 457 , Original number 98 , 'A Romanesque facade ', James L . Murphy , Jr. " and "98. " In the lower right corner is the artist's signature , an Alabama Polytechnic School of Architecture stamp , and a partly legible handwritten inscription which reads "1st Medal , ?? ?, (HC). " The painting is in poor condition with missing pieces and tears and is encapsulated .
