This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 2nd edition , 1996 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 132 : Percy Beard of Greensboro , captain of the 1929 Auburn track team , later established world records in the 100-meter and 120-yard hurdles six times and won three outdoor and four indoor National AAU hurdles championships . He finished second in the 100-meter event at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles and probably would have won but hit the sixth hurdle while in the lead . Beard , coaches Wilbur Hutsell and Mel Rosen , and 1927 NCAA and AAU hurdles champion Weems Baskin were members of the National Track and Field Hall of Fame . Beard served as track coach at the University of Florida for many years . His brother was Jeff Beard , Auburn athletic director in 1951-72 . Photo source : Auburn University Athletics Department .
