This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 61 : Auburn beat Alabama 32-22 on February 22 , 1893 , before five-thousand fans at Lakeview Park in Birmingham , in the first football game between the two schools . Leaning on his walking cane , the derby-hatted referee keeps a close eye on the action . Note : Participants weren't wearing helmets . R.T . Dorsey scored three touchdowns and Tom Daniels two for the Tigers , who had unveiled their "flying V " or "flying wedge " formation the year before in a 10-0 victory over Georgia .
