This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 156 : Horse-drawn artillery enlivened ROTC drills on Bullard Field in the 1930s . Horses had been a part of military training at least from the spring of 1921 , when fifty-three steeds arrived from Oklahoma and silenced a standing joke about Auburn's horseless artillery unit .
