This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 170-171 : Military veterans at API , unwilling to pay local food prices , formed a cooperative grocery store in 1946 . Their wives saved an average of 30 percent on food bills shopping at the co-op , the Alumnews reported . Confirming what the veterans had thought about the town's prices , a nationwide survey found that Auburn had the second highest cost of living in the United States .
