This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 189 : Most of those pictured here were API students waiting at the ever-familiar depot for a train , this time to take them to Atlanta and ROTC summer camp at Fort McPherson in 1942 or 1943 . A keen eye or magnifying glass can pick out All-American halfback Monk Gafford , standing at the curb facing the camera and wearing a dark letter sweater with an "A" on it .
