This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 59 : John W . Heisman backed legalizing the forward pass , invented the "Heisman Shift " originated the hidden-ball play and the modern center snap , introduced pulling guards , coached winning teams , and became the man for whom the Heisman Memorial Trophy was named . As Auburn's coach in 1895-1899 , he won twelve games , lost four , and tied two . In 1971 , Tiger quarterback Pat Sullivan became the first player from an Alabama school to win the Heisman Trophy , top individual award in college football . Auburn tailback Bo Jackson became the state's second Heisman winner in 1985 , and quarterback Cam Newton won Auburn's third Heisman in 2010 . Photo source : Auburn University Archives .
