This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 8 : The Auburn Knights Orchestra was organized on a permanent basis in 1930 . Within a few years it was playing at campuses throughout Alabama , Georgia , and Mississippi . Jazz clarinetist Gerald Yelverton , standing fourth from left in front of bus , played with the Glenn Miller Band after graduation in 1938 . Others were from left , same row , Joe Mitchell , Herc Barnard , Julian Van Hodges , and Toby Griffith ; on bus , Robin Russell , Chick Hatcher , Hilding Holmberg , Ed Wadsworth , Frank Speight , John Ivey , and Mike Ellis .
