From page 61 : Auburn coeds of 1900-01 , left to right , front row : Mabel Heard , Mollie Hollifield , L.M . Washington , Emma B . Culver . Back row : Annie L . Wright , Lucille Burton , Kate Lane , Toccoa Cozert , Sallie Ordway , Ethel J . Harwell . Auburn's first coeds were admitted in 1892 , and Willie Gertrude Little , Kate Conway Broun , and Margaret Kate Teague were among the first to attend a state institution of higher learning in the Southeast . At commencement exercises in 1894 , Alabama Governor Thomas Goode Jones escorted each coed to the rostrum to receive her degree "amid thunderous applause.
