From page 169 : Travis Tidwell came out of the Navy in time to become Auburn's starting quarterback in 1946 . He ran or passed the ball 339 times that season and led the nation in total offense with 1,715 yards . Auburn sports information director Frank Sego dubbed him "Travelin ' Trav " by the third game . An Associated Press sports writer said in 1981 , "I've never seen in forty-five years of watching football a better freshman player than Travis . He could do everything--run , pass , punt , play defense.".. . but his teams won only 9 of 38 games . One was a 14-13 victory over Alabama in 1949 , after the Tide had drubbed Auburn 55-0 the previous year . From 3rd edition , 2013 , page 198 : He broke an ankle sliding into second in a baseball game before his sophomore season and after that ran with a noticeable limp... . Tidwell became an insurance agent and financial consultant in Birmingham after a back injury ended his brief professional football career with the New York Giants .
