This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 193 : Japan's surrender in the summer of 1945 brought a smile from the unidentified coed at left and reaction from Starr Prolsdorfer of Mobile and Marilyn Sheffield of Pine Hill , pictured in Toomer Drugstore . An atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6 , and another on Nagasaki three days later forced Japan's unconditional surrender , which followed Germany's months earlier .
