This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 252 : Pat Sullivan gave credit to his family , coaches , teammates , and others in accepting the 1971 Heisman Trophy as the best college football player in the land . The presentation was made in New York City . As Sullivan responded , Auburn President Harry M . Philpott , movie actor John Wayne , and Coach Ralph Jordan sat to his right . Teammate Terry Beasley also was at the head table , at Sullivan's far left . More than seventy years earlier , John W . Heisman , the man for whom the trophy was named , had coached at Auburn .
