This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 34 : String ties , hats , books , and log fences were the picture-taking style in 1869 at East Alabama College as EAMC was now known to many . So were solemn expressions on, from left , John Frederick Greene , Jamestown , Georgia , now part of Fort Benning ; William M . Allums , Union Springs , and W . G . Shehan (or Shehee , depending on the source) , Enon . All three were majoring in Latin and mathematics . In addition , Greene , triple-majored in Greek , and Allums and Shehan in chemistry .
