Title
1854 : Auburn Gazette
Description
This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 21 : Near the middle 1850s , Auburn had three weekly newspapers--the Gazette , edited by Drake and Price ; the Herald , by Holifield and Reese ; and the Young Ladies ' Mirror , by students at the Female College . All were printed on the second floor of a wooden building near where the main campus gate now stands . By February 1854 , the editor and co-publisher of the Auburn Gazette , J . W . W . Drake , had left the newspaper business , but he continued to use its services . An advertisement bearing his name as director-secretary of the Female College warned that if all due tuition accounts were not paid before the next return day , the college would sue to collect them.
