This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 138 : Bennett Battle Ross grew up in Auburn , the son of a minister who taught at East Alabama Male College and Alabama A&M . Ross twice served as acting API president , was the first dean of Agricultural Sciences , was state chemist , and was long remembered as "a real teacher " and "the grand old dean of chemistry. " He helped build a bicycle path from Auburn to what is now Chewacla Park . One former student recalled his making tubs of lemonade at commencement time . He and his wife had Auburn's first two-bathroom house , building a separate bathroom for planned guest William Jennings Bryan , who had to cancel the visit . Ross died of heart disease in 1930 just after the completion of Ross Hall , where his body lay in state . Photo source : Auburn University Archives .
