Description
This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 32 : Dr . James Ferguson Dowdell , Methodist minister , former Alabama congressman , and retired Confederate Army colonel , served as president of East Alabama Male College during hard times following the Civil War . After the institution reopened in 1866 , Dowdell's pay was halved and his faculty members also took salary cuts to help keep it operating despite declining enrollments . Dowdell resigned in the face of criticism in 1870 , and a faculty government ran the college its last two years . The Methodist Conference turned the campus over to the State of Alabama for use as a land-grant college in 1872 . Photo source : Auburn University Archives .
