From page 322 : [President] James Martin (1984-92) , a pianist , plays jazz by ear . He enjoys three 1956 Ford Thunderbirds , flying , reading John Grisham novels , remembering Robert W . Service poems , and walking with his wife , Ann , a former Auburn cheerleader . As guest co-pilot of an F-5 Air Force jet while president , Martin made three passes over Samford Hall . The six-foot-six former basketball player's knees were wedged under the plane's instrument panel . Martin said he would have been "in deep trouble " had he needed to eject .
