Title
1990s : Main runway at Auburn-Opelika Airport
Description
This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 339 : Plans in 1996 called for this main north-south runway to be lengthened to 5,260 feet at the Robert G . Pitts Auburn-Opelika Airport . The additional 1,260 feet would provide safer conditions for takeoffs and landings.. . The extension would be part of an estimated $13-million development of the airport , which is owned by Auburn University... . East Glenn Avenue would be rerouted about 1.7 miles to pass south of the extended runway , tentatively by early 1998 . A city landfill would be closed to make room for the extension... . The overall project was expected to be completed between the years 2001 and 2004 if funding arrived promptly . Photo source : Auburn University Photographic Services .
