This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 67 : A three-story brick annex , initially used for pharmacy instruction , was built in 1896-97 at the rear of the first Chemistry Building , later called the Music Building and in 1978 Hargis Hall . The annex also provided space for classes in chemistry , mechanical engineering , and drafting before it was removed in 1964 . From 3rd edition , 2013 , page 75 : Over the years , Hargis Hall housed chemistry instruction , then architecture , followed by music , then the Graduate School , and other offices . The building was named for Estes Hargis , a 1917 Auburn graduate and a Birmingham surgeon . He and his wife endowed a professorship in English , and also helped pay for renovating Hargis Hall .
