This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 166 : Allie Glenn , college treasurer for approximately forty-seven years , welcomed visits from former Auburn students , such as Marine Major General Franklin A. Hart . In her earlier years , many of the boys deposited money with her to cover their year's expenses . She kept individual accounts , cashing checks as they needed money and sending a monthly statement to each student's parents . Hart , later a lieutenant general , starred as a light but fighting halfback on two undefeated Auburn football teams before graduating in 1915 . Hart also competed in track and soccer . He served in both World Wars I and II , earning the Navy Cross for heroism.. . in 1944 . Auburn bestowed an LL.D . degree on him in 1953 . Photo source : Auburn University Archives .
