This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 116 : Freshman Cleveland Adams of Eufaula began his college career in 1928 with a full head of hair under his cap , a Birmingham News scholarship paying $500 a year , and an armload of books and shoes . The hair was soon to go as the male members of Adams ' class became the last to be shorn en masse before President Bradford Knapp stopped the practice... .
