This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 107 : A group of 4-H Clubbers gathered for a ceremony in the 1920s on the baseball field between Alumni Gym (in the background) and Samford Hall . The youths camped in the tents near the gym that male students had lived in during the school year because of a housing shortage .
