This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 198 : In 1946 , forty-nine years after formation of the first cadet band on campus , five coeds became the first API drum majorettes . They were, left to right : Zilpha Ann Draper , Danny Sue Gibson , head majorette Kelda M . Ward , Nancy Young , and Joann "Bunny " Bennett . David A. Herbert became assistant to Paul R . "Bedie " Bidez , longtime director , and developed dramatically different routines for the band's halftime performances at football games . Two years later , majorettes were at the fore when the Auburn band passed in review in Washington , DC , at the inauguration parade of President Harry S . Truman .
