This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 323 : Dr . Wayne Flynt arrived at Auburn as head of the History Department in 1977 , became one of the University's most visible and productive faculty members , and was known for "prodding Alabama's moral conscience. " By his retirement in 2005 as a Distinguished University Professor , he had authored or co-authored eleven books... . "During his forty year University teaching career , he taught more than 6,000 students and directed 42 master's theses and 30 doctoral dissertations , " the biographical sketch noted at Flynt's induction into the Alabama Academy of Honor... .
