Description
This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 58 : Sheldon L . "Shel " Toomer , a halfback on Auburn's first football team , an 1893 graduate in agriculture and an 1897 pharmacy graduate , became the man for whom "Toomer's Corner " is named . Besides operating a drugstore there for more than half a century , Toomer owned a hardware store , helped found the Auburn National Bank and served as its president for nearly fifty years , and was the president of the Auburn Ice & Coal Co . He served on the City Council for more than two decades , spent three terms in the Alabama Legislature , was an API trustee , and was for thirty years an Episcopal vestryman .
