This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 112 : Wilbur Hutsell and Snitz Snider were Auburn's delegates to the 1928 Olympic Games at Amsterdam . Hutsell coached the winning 1,600-meter relay team , and Snider competed in the 400-meter run . Hutsell served as an Olympic coach three times and had four Olympic performers from Auburn . The others were Percy Beard , second in the 120-yard high hurdles in 1932 ; Whitey Overton , 1948 steeplechase ; and Jim Dillion , third in the discus in 1952 .
