Title
1887 : Remains of Old Main building after fire
Description
This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 37 : Ashes and scorched bricks remained of Old Main after a fire on June 24 , 1887 , destroyed the building , consuming classrooms , administrative offices , the library , a museum , military arms , scientific apparatus , and a valuable portrait of Daniel Webster . Rumors flew that the loss might be the end of the Agricultural and Mechanical College . President William LeRoy Broun issued a circular assuring that the institution would open as usual for the fall semester ; and it did , with Langdon Hall partitioned for classrooms . Bricks from Old Main were used to help lay the foundation for a new building on the same ground . Photo source : Auburn University Archives .
