This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 37 : Fire has been a threat to Auburn train stations . Lightning struck this one and burned it in about 1904 . Forty years earlier , Federal troops had put the torch to the town's first station . Annie Terrell Basore , as a child , saw the second fire from her home across Mitcham Avenue . "We were sitting on a side porch , and a lightning stroke came down " she said . "It killed a mule and burned the depot. " Photo source : Auburn University Archives .
