This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 213 : Auburn coed Leah Marie Rawls won national championships on water skis and honors in the classroom during the 1950s . She became the first woman inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the first recipient of an Auburn Ph.D . in history . She married George Atkins , an outstanding guard of the early fifties on the Auburn football team who later became an associate director of the Office of Alumni and Development . After teaching at Auburn , University of Alabama-Birmingham , and Samford University , Dr . Atkins became the first director of the Auburn Center for the Arts and Humanities.. . [and] was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor in 2007 . From 1st edition , 1981 , page 185 : Dr . Atkins is shown training at Cypress Gardens , Florida , in 1954 .
