1940s: Royal Air Force cadets
Title
1940s : Royal Air Force cadets
Description
This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 188 : These Royal Air Force cadets were much more familiar with British rugby , and although the thumbs-up in this photo could have been a sign of approval of the Auburn-Clemson football game , this perhaps was just the British way of saying , "Keep Smiling! " Thumbs-up later gave way to a great extent to the "V " for victory made popular by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill . These cadets attended the game while on holiday from training at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery . Within a few months , they were directly involved in Great Britain's grim battle for survival .
