This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 150 : API President L.N . Duncan welcomed FDR with a handshake as the visitor's Cadillac stopped behind the Quad Dorms . President Roosevelt got a booming ovation from the crowd occupying special bleachers when he started his speech with the familiar , "My friends. " In his address he urged Auburn students to work toward helping the South become self-sufficient . He also said he had been strictly neutral about the Auburn-Georgia football game , noting that he was a part-time resident of Warm Springs , Georgia , but added : "Perhaps (next fall) I shall lean a little bit more toward Auburn.
