This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 3rd edition , 2013 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 311 : Dr . Bessie Mae Holloway , a Mobile County educator , was Auburn University's first African-American trustee . She was named by Governor George Wallace in 1985 to fill an unexpired term . She was reappointed to a full twelve-year term in 1987 . Dr . Holloway is shown greeting Auburn graduates at commencement . She earned a doctorate in education from Auburn , a master's from Xavier University in Louisiana , and a bachelor's from Alabama State . Holloway became the second woman to serve on the Board of Trustees . The first , Sue Fincher , served in 1975-79 . Photo source : Auburn University Black History .
