This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 2nd edition , 1996 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 114 : Governor Bibb Graves inspected the ROTC unit on Governor's Day in the late 1920s at what is now Ross Square . At left was Alumni Gym . Graves also was on hand in 1930 for the dedication of Bullard Field , used for ROTC drill and intramural football and softball until five women's dorms were built there in 1952 . The dedication honored former Auburn student and World War I hero Robert Lee Bullard . The field was also used for polo during the decade leading up to World War II when the Army had horse drawn artillery units at API . Photo source : Leonard W . Thomas .
