This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 2nd edition , 1996 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 101 : Four shorn freshmen , called "rats " posed as hard-drinking poker players in 1917 at Dumas Ranch , a Magnolia Avenue boarding house . While the props may have been staged for the photographs , alumnus Lyle Brown said the pranks were pretty rough . "You might come home and find a yearling tied to your bed " he said .
