Description
Father John Cusack is a Vincentian cleric from Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . Cusack spent time during the summer of 1945 helping with mission work at St . Michael the Archangel Catholic Church (formerly Sacred Heart Church) in Auburn , Alabama . He also worked with German POW's from Camp Opelika . Cusack currently resides at St . Vincent's Seminary in Philadelphia . George Marlett served in North Africa and Sicily during World War II . He also worked as a guard at Camp Opelika during the last few years of the war until it closed in 1945 . Marlett then re-enlisted with the Army Reserves and worked in that capacity until his retirement having earned the rank of Sergeant Major . He served in many National Guard units including those in Cleveland , Ohio , Montgomery , Alabama , and Opelika , Alabama . Oral history interviews conducted by Dr . Judith Lechner and her son Walden Lechner for his class project for his master's degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham . Also a research paper , "Bringing German POWs to an American Way of Thinking : What Worked Best. "
