George Henry Cooke served as a naval surgeon for the United States Navy during the American Civil War . After the war he remained in the Navy and served aboard numerous vessels in both the Atlantic and the Pacific . He is perhaps best remembered as a member of Ulysses S . Grant's medical team during the president's extended tour around the world following his term in office . Includes genealogical information , a medical notebook , logbooks , journals , and newspaper releases related to Navy surgeon George H . Cooke .
