Description
The Newell family resided in Meriwether County , Georgia prior to the American Civil War . Following the war , Andrew Jackson Newell married Sarah M . Goss and relocated to Hickory Flat , Chambers County , Alabama . A. J . Newell enlisted in the Confederate Army on March 4 , 1862 and served as a private in Ferrell's Battery . He saw action in the Atlanta Campaign and with General Nathan Bedford Forrest in Middle Tennessee . After the war , Newell purchased a farm and produced cotton , tabacco , wheat and other crops . Contains photocopies of various letters and business documents from the Newell family of Hickory Flat , Chambers County , Alabama . A bulk of the letters are from Andrew Jackson Newell who served with Ferrell's Battery (a.k.a . 14th Georgia Light Artillery Battalion , Company C) during the American Civil War . His letters offer insights on military camp life and battles in Georgia and Tennessee .
