Description
James M . Williams was a resident of Harpersfield , Delaware County , New York . He enlisted in the 109th New York Volunteer Infantry at Binghamton on August 27 , 1862 . From September of 1862 to March of 1864 , the 109th New York guarded the railroads leading into Washington , D . C . at Annapolis Junction , Maryland . From May until June of 1864 , Private Williams ' regiment campaigned from the Rapidan to Petersburg , Virginia , participating in the Battle of the Wilderness , Spotsylvania Court House and the Ny River . By the late June of 1864 , The 109th was entrenched near Petersburg where it remained until the city eventually surrendered in early April of 1865 . Private Williams was mustered out of service on June 4 , 1865 . Following the war he returned to Delaware County and married Ruth L . Bradley on September 26 , 1865 . Contains forty-four letters written from March 1862 to May 1865 by Private James M . Williams of the 109th New York Volunteer Infantry to Ruth L . Bradley of Franklin , Delaware County , New York . The letters contain Williams ' comments concerning his duties , his tent mates , the weather , personal health , morale and military operations in Virginia during the last year of the American Civil War . Includes poetry by Private Williams and an envelope of flag fragments from a barracks flag that flew over the regiments camp .
