Lane , a professor at Virginia Military Institute in 1861 , served as major of the 1st North Carolina Infantry and colonel of the 28th North Carolina Infantry . He was appointed brigadier general in November 1862 . After the war , he taught at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute , Missouri School of Mines , and Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama .
