Description
Whitby enlisted in Company D , 37th Alabama Infantry in 1862 , serving with it until the end of the Civil War . Afterwards , he studied then practiced dentistry in the Alabama towns of Auburn , Wetumpka , and Selma . Collection includes transcripts of Whitby's Civil War letters , materials on 19th century dentistry in Alabama , and genealogical data on the Whitby family into the 1990s . Also includes 1 photograph of first reunion of Co . D , 37th Alabama , on August 4 , 1906 at Binford's Springs , near Auburn , Ala . This group reputedly comprised the first Auburn baseball team , formed in 1866 .
