Description
Jacob R . Shotwell was born on January 13 , 1842 in Middlesex County , New Jersey . Prior to the start of the American Civil War he was a resident of Luzerne County , Pennsylvania . He enlisted with Company B of the 12th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment on May 15 , 1861 for a term of three months . The regiment was later reorganized as the 41st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment and mustered into service for a period of three years . Private Shotwell saw action early on in the war and was at the Battle of Gettysburg . During the time period of the diary he marched and fought with the Army of the Potomac in Northern Virginia . He returned home on June 16 , 1864 . Following the war he worked as a stone mason and plasterer in Kingston and Monroe , Pennsylvania . He died on May 3 , 1918 . Consists of the Civil War diary of Private Jacob R . Shotwell of Company B of the 41st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment . The diary documents Private Shotwell's activities during 1864 , while serving with the Army of the Potomac in Virginia and while at his residence in Luzerne County , Pennsylvania . Diary includes a brief description of the Battle of Spottsylvania .
