Commentary
Widowhood in July 1906 brought sorrow but also new freedom for Olivia Sage . Russell Sage had evidently disliked travel except for purposes of business , for Olivia Sage had rarely ventured away from New York City in thirty-seven years of marriage . This hitherto unknown image was discovered in a photo album at Lyndhurst , the home of the Goulds , by archivist Cathryn McElroy Anders . It suggests that Olivia seized her new freedom in several ways , including foreign travel . Not surprisingly in view of her lifelong Christian faith , she chose to travel not to Europe but to Palestine in the company of her young friend , protogee , and fellow philanthropist Helen Gould . Easter Day fell on March 30 in 1907 , and Olivia , Helen , and their friends spent it in Jerusalem . [Commentary written by Dr . Ruth Crocker]
Item Description
This is a photograph of a group of American tourists in Palestine . The photo was taken in 1907 . The group is arranged with the six women seated on the hot , dusty ground among rocks and sand , and four men standing at the rear . A few cypress trees dot the landscape which appears quite barren . The elderly woman in the center wearing black is probably the recently widowed Olivia Sage . Despite the hot sunlight , she is completely swathed in clothes -- an elaborate dress with leg-of-mutton sleeves that come down to the wrists , a hat , and even gloves .
