Commentary
This photograph from a postcard , ca. 1920 , shows Harbor Home , Olivia Sage's summer retreat at Sag Harbor , Long Island , around 1900 . Olivia bought this columned mansion , also called the Huntting House , after she was widowed . It had belonged to a wealthy merchant with interests in whaling . More than just a summer place out of the city , Sag Harbor loomed large in Olivia's imagination . It was where her grandfather , John Jermain , had settled and where her mother went to school . Genealogists for hire like Henry Whittemore , who compiled a volume on the Sage and Slocum families published in 1908 , helped "transform the colonial past into a flattering prelude to the present " and Sag Harbor was very much a part of that narrative of ascent . Olivia lived there during every visit to Sag Harbor between 1908 and 1912 . After she quarreled with the city fathers , she no longer visited but spent her summers in Lawrence , Long Island , instead . [Commentary written by Dr . Ruth Crocker]
