Commentary |
Olivia Josselyn Slocum, Olivia's paternal grandmother, married William Brown Slocum in 1793. A sampler embroidered by her daughter with a verse of the mother's poetry survives, and it testifies to her faith. It includes: "Let living faith and love divine Possess this youthful heart of mine; That when my flesh returns to dust, My soul will triumph with the just." For Olivia Sage, her grandmother embodied simplicity, stern purpose, and steadfast Christian faith. [Commentary written by Dr. Ruth Crocker] |
