Commentary
This portrait shows the Hon . Joseph Slocum , Olivia's father . His career included , in addition to the business ventures documented here, one term as New York State Representative for his district -- a bribe , it was said , for his involvement in a speculation with his future son-in-law , Russell Sage . Joseph Slocum traveled to Europe several times and won acclaim for designs of improved farm tools . But the 1857 Panic seems to have finished him off . His wife , Olivia's mother , went to live with relatives after the family's home in Syracuse was put up for sale . [Crocker , *Mrs . Russell Sage* , pp . 68 , 74] In this photograph , a grim smile and haunted eyes suggest setbacks in both business and politics , and perhaps also the tuberculosis that would end his life at the age of sixty-three . [Commentary written by Dr . Ruth Crocker]
