Commentary
This photo shows Eliza Kellas at around age fifty , the age at which Olivia Sage persuaded her to become principal of the new Russell Sage College of Practical Arts in Troy , New York . Kellas had graduated from Potsdam Normal College , then attended the University of Michigan in 1898 . In 1905 , she earned a scholarship to Radcliffe , securing her B.A . in 1911 . Kellas corresponded with E . Lilian Todd who , based at the Fifth Avenue home of Olivia Sage , was guiding Olivia as she made decisions about the disposal of her philanthropic millions . Their correspondence , recently come to light , allows us to trace the origins of the Russell Sage College of Practical Arts , an educational experiment for its time aiming to educate women for well-paying careers . Olivia Sage enthusiastically embraced this goal , and though she was too elderly (at eighty-eight) to bother with the details , she agreed to found the College . It was her last significant philanthropic donation . [Commentary written by Dr . Ruth Crocker]
