Commentary |
Inventor and self-made woman E. (Emma) Lilian Todd found a patron in the elderly and restless Olivia Sage. Sage, who probably came to know Todd through Helen Gould, had faith in her abilities and gave her $7,000 to design and build the plane seen here. It was constructed by Witteman Brothers of Staten Island. The Mineola Flying Field was not far from her summer home at Lawrence, Long Island, and Sage enjoyed spending hours there watching the planes fly. As she watched Todd's plane, she remarked that she saw "no reason why women should not fly as well as men." [Crocker, *Mrs. Russell Sage*, p. 1] [Commentary written by Dr. Ruth Crocker] |
