New year, new resolutions by president
Dear Students,
On behalf of the Student Government
Association, welcome
hack to Auburn for another
great semester! Spring is always
an exciting
time on the
Plains, and 1
am sure it has
a great deal in
store for all of
us.
Ibis semester,
I encourage
you
to take part in
something unique to Auburn—
whether it's joining a campus
organization, becoming involved
with a campus ministry,
volunteering with IMPACT or
attending a play at the Telfair
Pect 1heat.cn
Additionally, this spring will
be an extremely busy time lor
Hayes
our athletic department, and I
hope you will take the opportunity
to support our many teams,
from basketball and baseball to
gymnastics and swimming.
I also want to remind you
that you will have the chance to
voice your opinion in the SGA
elections this February. You will
not only be choosing your new
SGA President. Vice President.
Treasurer and Miss Auburn, but
this year, you will also be voting
in a special referendum to build
a new student recreation and
wellness center. We all know
that our student act is highly inadequate
for our student body.
We need a more spacious
center that we are excited to
use and proud to show off. Our
board of Trustees has already
hired architects to design the
facility, and I have worked
alongside other students and
administrators in helping these
architects design the ideal center
for recreation and wellness
for our campus.
1 lowever, in order to continue
moving this project forward, we
need the student body's support
and commitment to fund the
project through student fees.
1 encourage you to vote in favor
of this special referendum
so that we may keep our great
momentum and quickly build
one of the nation's best recreation
and wellness centers.
I wish you the very best with
all that you do this spring! Study
hard, have fun and most of all,
make the most of your time in
Auburn. I hope that you can
look back on this semester as
the best yet on the Plains!

"The best preparation for
work is not thinking about work,
talking about work,
or studying for work: it is work.
— William Weld
What is Co-Op?
Cooperative Education can confirm or redirect career decision-making through
on-the-job experience in a chosen field . . . since co-ops 'TEST DRIVE" their career!
Co-Op enhances classroom learning and adds relevance to education by integrating
academic theory with real world work experience.
How does Co-Op work?
By alternating terms of school and work, students
obtain paid, practical work experience in the career of
their choice. This experience means better qualifications
when competing for a job at graduation.
The Co-Op Advantage
• Co-Op graduates are in possession of relevant work
experience.
• Many employers hire only graduates with strong
experience in the profession.
• Co-Op grads have established relationships with
potential employers which improves their employment
prospects at graduation.
• Co-Op grads often receive higher starting salaries at
graduation than regular graduates.
• Professional confidence is increased when students
know they can successfully perform in the
workplace. . .where it really counts!

Summers away from Auburn cause
stress about subleasing apartments
MALLORY BOYKIN
niullory.bnykmkitlwplninsmiui.com
Even though we just got back
from Christmas break, some
of us are already making plans
about how we are going to
spend our summer vacations.
Before you start daydreaming
about fun in the sun or planning
lor summer internships,
think about what you are going
to do with your apartment this
summer.
II you are positive you are not
going to be here this summer,
the time to start looking for a
subleaser is now.
I know, summer seems like
it is forever away, but it will Inhere
before you know it and
if you wait too long all of the
good subleasers will be taken.
A good place to start is contacting
your rental company to
see if they allow subleasing and
if they can help you find one.
but chances are you will be on
your own.
If you have already attempted
I he obvious, asking your
friends if they need a place to
crash this summer, then it's
time to change your lacebook
status.
You can even take it one step
further and post your room for
rent on l-'acebook Marketplace.
Other gooil places to look are
the dorms. Countless numbers
of freshmen will have to stay on
campus this summer to take
classes and they will have to
move out of their dorms, but
most leases for new apartments
don't start until August.
Don't forget about Haley
Center either. The bulletin
boards lining the halls are a
great place to advertise.
Have your roommates meet
your subleaser ahead of time. It
could be a disaster if they don't
get along.
However you find your sub-leaser,
remember it needs to be
someone that you can trust will
pay the rent every month.

career. Curtis has done an outstanding
job coaching running
backs and I am excited to coach
with him again."
Two days later, Chizick hired
former Iowa State University
assistant coach Jay Boulware to
coach special teams.
Boulware served as running
backs coach and special teams
coordinator under Chizick.
"I've had the good fortune
of working with Coach Chizik
the last two seasons and I am
thrilled to be joining his staff at
Auburn," Boulware said.
Boulware coached at Texas,
Northern Illinois, Arizona, Stanford
and Utah before coming to
Iowa State in 2006.

Swimming coach Richard
Quick diagnosed with cancer
Auburn men's and women's
head swimming and diving
coach Richard Quick was diagnosed
with an inoperable cancerous
brain tumor just days
before the start of 2009.
A six-time Olympic coach.
Quick has also led 12 teams to
NCAA titles.
Quick, 30, said he is currently
looking for ways to combat the
cancerous tumor.
"We're in the process of looking
for the best care possible to
fight this," Quick said in a statement
released by Auburn Media
Relations Dec. 30. "I want to
thank the countless individuals
that have passed along their well
wishes, thoughts and prayers."
Auburn Athletics Director
asked the "Auburn Family" to
keep Quick in their prayers.
"Richard is such an energetic
person, has an incredibly positive
attitude and is bound by his
faith," Jacobs said. "I know that
he's going to meet this challenge
head on, just as he has
done with every endeavor he's
encountered."
Quick served as Auburn's
head coach from 1978-82, then
returned for a second time in
2007.
While at Stanford and Texas,
Quick won seven NCAA titles, a
lie for the most in the history of
Division I coaching.
Quick was also the head
coach for the United States
teamafthe 1988, 1996 and 2000
Olympic Games and an assistant
for the 1984, 1992 and 2004
Olympics.
Brett I Iawke will take over in
the interim as men's head coach
under the direction of Quick.
Dorsey Tierney-Walker will run
the women's program.

Remembering the reasons why f Village Wok
LAUREN SMITH
lauren.smitli@thcplainsmun.com
It is important to always have
a big picture in mind when trying
to accomplish something.
Most people like to take
things one clay at a time, but
you can lose focus and forget
why you even started the task
in the first place.
A few semesters ago, back
when I had not declared a
major and had no idea what I
wanted from Auburn 1 wondered
if spending t housands of
dollars on something is worth
the experience.
Cut to present day, and my
answer to my younger self is
yes.
Once I found something that
lit my interests and skills, going
to class was not as tasking as 1
once thought it was.
Most days (not all) I actually
find myself enjoying what
my journalism professors are
leaching me.
Plus, I have to keep in mind 1
am not doing this college thing
solely for myself. People are
watching me.
No, I do not live in some Truman
Show world (mine would
be boring, trust me), but I do
have two younger sisters looking
to me as an example.
talk about pressure. 1 could
not. screw this up.
I am the first in my family to
go to college and I do not want
to be the last.
I want my sisters to look at
me and see that it is possible
(in four years, no less).
One of my sisters will graduate
high school in May and
while she is not going to a major
university, I am still happy
she has chosen community
college.
My other sister is 10, and
while I have time to work on
her, 1 know she is watching me.
Being home for Christmas
with my sisters reminded me
again I am not earning this
degree for just myself.
So I've stuck with Auburn
these last three and a half years
(it was not always easy, as most
students already know), and I
am proud to tell (and brag to)
my sisters that yesterday was
my last first day of class EVER.
And that is worth every cent.

First-week resolutions
ELLISON LANGFORD
cUisoiLlaiigford@Utcplauismwt.com
Jan. I, a day when an entire
culture comes together to
resolve to do away with their
personal shortcomings and
become better individuals.
Hut soon enough, typically
around the mid-month mark,
the list is forgotten and we go to
our bad habits.
Hut why does the quest for
self-improvement suddenly feel
so urgent when the last digit on
the date changes? It's not like we
automatically gel a clean slate
when the ball drops at midnight.
Hut wouldn't we eel more
accomplished by striving to become
better people year-round?
How about, instead of waiting
until Jan. 1 to get around to that
laundry list of improvements,
personal change becomes some-
Ihing that goes on all year. After
all, you can get a lot. more done
in 365 days than you can in 14.
And as much as we all may
dislike it, most things are best
dealt with immediately. 1 have
never actually had a paper write
itself. So 1 finally resolved, after
many agonizing all-nighters, to
start them at least a few days
before they're due. You would be
amazed at the results I am getting
by doing that!
Despite this minor Hash of
brilliance, I am still nowhere
near the ideal human being. Hut
people aren't making suggestions!
o improve my actions a
lot less when I work to try and
be less of an idiot, rather than
waiting until a specific day to
squelch ;ill of my demons at once.
