This image is a collection of five maps of the state of Alabama taken from the Fall issue of Alabama Historical Quarterly 1944 , showing the formation of Alabama as a state from 1820 to 1870 . Each map has its own title . The first map has the title "Alabama in 1820. " It shows the existence of the Indian territories on the eastern part of the state . The second map has the title "Alabama in 1830. " A note at the bottom of the map says "The Formative Period in Alabama 1815 - 1828 by Abernathy , page 177. " The third map has the title "Alabama 1840. " The bottom note says "Adapted from Dorman's Party Politics in Alabama from 1850 through 1860. " The fourth map's title is "Alabama in 1850 and 1860. " There is also a note at the bottom part mentioning "Benton County's Name changed to Calhoun , Jan . 29th 1858 . Hancock County's Name changed to Winston , January 22 , 1858. " The fifth map has the title "Alabama in 1870. " The maps are printed maps mounted on a single piece of cardboard . It is not encapsulated . Some tear marks are shown on the fourth and fifth map . Discoloration is noticeable , too .
