1023, Birmingham
Tuesday night, April, 1905
My dear Lila,
I should have
written you before, but
have been real sick,
was not so well Satur-
day, and Sunday morning
waked up with worst
sick headache, have had
in years, never knew
how the day passed, or
hardly anything. too bad
we could not go to church
Sister had to stay with
me, she & Lula did all they
could for me, I took some
medicine, and feel like
[page 2]
a new person today;
E. B. has been sick too.
looks thin & bad, too
close confinement one
thing, and indigestion,
was home yesterday, and
came in to day, but had
to leave store and
come over here; rested
here 'til after dinner
then went home; thinks
he will be able to work
tomorrow; I am so sorry
he looks & feels bad,
"Aunt Bell" comes tomorrow,
Edna wants us all to go
out there tomorrow eve
asked boys not to make
an engagement for the eve.
[page 3]
2 - E. B. brought me your
letter to read "said it was
such a nice letter, and
he appreciated it;"
Well Bro M, Rob, Louis
& White all met Sadie
& her friend at train,
we had nice supper
waiting for them, but
Sadie went on home with
Miss Hayes, will see us
tomorrow; Bro M & Rob
came on home with the
basket; flowers so sweet
& beautiful, almost made
me home sick for Hill
Crest; all thought the
butter just beautiful,
Aunt C. surely did her
[page 4]
best with the cow; I read
your letter after the
boys all left; I guess
Aunt C is just tired,
tell her to hold out few
days longer; next
Tuesday is 2nd May. I
will go down and get
things to carry down with
me; if nothing happens
will come last of week,
and not later than the
next Monday the 8th May,
will come Friday or Sat
if can get every thing ready,
do not want to make
another bill this month,
We may go shopping
Monday 1st, will to best I
[page 5]
3 - can; I think can get
this woman Lula to go
if you think best; can
talk it over when I come
I prefer a darkey if
can get one. I am glad
the Brady's are there,
think they are kind, and
would help you in time
of need. (You know how
he came, to kill that
snake), & be careful and
do not say anything about
them to any darkey. You
know how they talk; no
matter to us how the
Bradys manage their
own affairs; Bro M
thinks it the very thing to
[page 6]
have them on place, so
does "Sister". Bro M
[illegible] to [M ?] Saturday
night with Mr. Porter
intending to come up to
V Sunday; forgot
about the mail train
not stopping now, and
got left; said freight light
in B. room that night
looked cheerful;
Henry H. & Pat went
down with him Saturday
to consult Dr. Thigpen
he agreed with Drs here;
"can do nothing for three
or four weeks, dare
not probe for piece
torpedo, fear it would
[page 7]
4 - cause inflammation,
might ruin the good eye;
I went to see them, so
sorry for Cousin Mattie
and all of them;
I had chat with Sarah
since supper, told her
you sent one cake of the
butter to her, said oh, how
nice; yes, I felt sure
Aunt Bell would bring
Edna some;
Sister went to see Mary
Ellen yesterday aft.
found Miss Hattie Morris
& [Hulit ?] L. there. Henry
came in, we had jolly time,
I have lots to tell you, but
will see you next week.
[page 8]
we can soon fix every
thing when I come; if you
take care of yourself and
do not get excited, you
will get on OK; I do not
think you will be sick
before last of May, but
I will come on any how,
will feel better satisfied,
Sadie will be here with
"Sister"; Gene wrote us to
call on her friend from
Dallas Texas, Mrs. Johnston
she has been in Montgomery
attending that Miss. Conf.
we called her up over
phone to day; nicely spoken
pleasant voice; raining
hard & steady all day, so
[page 9]
5 - we could not get to see
her, and tomorrow all
that [doings ?] unveiling
monument &c.; Sarah
coming early, and we
will go over there, some
where, see the parade,
Lizzie Bostwick is with
Bessie Molton to night
on way to Jim's wedding
tomorrow eve, hope it
may be fair; L will stop
on return, we chatted with
Bessie this eve, 'phone;
I suppose you make out
with Aunt C. until I
come next week, that is
if she will stay; what do
you think of trying Lula
[page 10]
if can get her ? she
could sleep up stairs;
or if you think that girl
of Ellen's will do, she
will be cheaper, I may
get some one here even
better than this Lula; our
Lula is trying to find
one; I hope Sadie will stay
with "Sister while I am
gone, Bro M & Louis go
to Bank every night, and
Rob does not like to feel
that he must stay, though
he often retires early
Louis works late every
night, Mr. Crawford told
Bro M yesterday "Louis
was working too hard, to
look out for some handy
[page 11]
6 - fellow to help him."
Sister is tired, sewing
hard all day, so will close
and go up with her;
every thing looking so nice
fresh lace curtains, and
all these lovely flowers,
but we have good little
fire, damp & cool;
dear little Joseph, we
all talk about him, and
want to see him; I am getting
up things for him; do not
fret, and take care of
yourself; Carl will be with
you Saturday & Sunday, and
I will come next week
Good night, with fondest love
always your dear Mother
